LOW-LEVEL DESCRIPTORS


Low-level (1000 hPa) descriptors are computed as meridional and zonal gradients for Moist Static Energy and Mean Sea-level Pressure.

Meridional gradients are calculated over the 10W - 10E window, as NORTH minus SOUTH box

Zonal gradients are calculated over the 10N - 20N AND 20N-30N windows, as WEST minus EAST box

Time-series files are provided in ASCII, each file contains 4 columns, with:

column 1: integer = YEAR
column 2: integer = MONTH
column 3: integer = DAY
column 4: integer = values (Kj/Kg for MSE)


Meridional gradients Zonal gradients Individual Indexes for the meridional gradients (i.e. NORTH and SOUTH indexes) Individual Indexes for the zonal gradients (i.e. WEST and EAST indexes for the two latitude belts [10N20N and 20N30N])

The top plots represents the raw daily values in black (in KJ/Kg),  the blue  line is the mean annual cycle

The figures are provided in jpeg (left column) and postscript (right), the names follow the rule NCEP2_MSE_MEgrad_{region_number}_{northern box}_{southern box}_{period}.{extension} for the meridional gradients and NCEP2_MSLP_ZO_grad_{latitudinal belt}_{western box}_{eastern box}_{period}.{extension} for the zonal gradients
